I know, I’m on this health kick lately. Both my in-laws have type two Diabetes and I promised them 757 1/2 hours of research to find them an alternative to their prescription medications – one which is Metformin. I’m not sure which the other is yet. I need to speak more with them.
In any event… Meet Berberine. Berberine has been shown to lower blood sugar, cause weight loss and improve cardiovascular health, amongst other positive effects. It’s one of the few supplements shown to be as effective as a pharmaceutical drug.
Berberine decreases Insulin resistance making it more affective as a blood sugar lowering hormone. It increases glycolysis which helps the body break down sugars inside cells. And it decreases sugar production in the liver.

Berberine, a natural plant alkaloid, is usually used as an antibiotic drug. The potential glucose-lowering effect of berberine was noted when it was used for diarrhea in diabetic patients. In vitro and in vivo studies have then showed its effects on hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia.
In this study of 116 diabetic patients, 1 gram of Berberine per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 20% from 7.0 to 5.6 mmol/L (126 to 101 mg/dL), or from diabetic to normal levels!
PubMed conclusion? Berberine is effective and safe in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia.
In another study where people took 500mg of Berberine three times daily – they lost five pounds in twelve weeks – without any changes in diet or exercise. In another study where people took 300mg of Berberine three times daily – their body mass index (BMI) dropped from 31.5 to 27.4 – or from “obese” to “overweight”. Berberine also appears to inhibit the growth of fat cells at the molecular level.
Some other stuff to know. Berberine lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and raises HDL (good cholesterol). Okay, I’m just going to stop there because I could go on and on and if I do too much of that it’s going to sound too good to be true. So do your own research. But you might want to talk to your doctor about getting off of prescription drugs and onto more natural substances for your health.
